Perched on a ridge spilling down into a gorge the town of Monica comprises the upper town (Modica Alta) and the lower town (Modica Bassa). This is the most prosperous town in Sicily, renowned for its chocolate, excellent shopping and gastronomy, yet it is an unpretentious sort of place and far from glitzy. The pride of Monica is the Baroque Duomo di San Giorgio perched precariously above the alleys of the historic upper town, surmounting a daunting baroque flight of 250 steps. Its rival is the opulent church of San Pietro, on the Corso, reached by another theatrical stairway.
